Who draws random Greek letters?
More people than you might guess. Math and physics instructors pull a random symbol for the next variable so examples don’t always default to θ and λ. Students memorizing the alphabet — for science coursework or for organization life, where chapter names are Greek strings — quiz themselves against random draws instead of reciting in order, which is the difference between knowing the song and knowing the letters. Naming schemes (project code names, cohorts, hurricane-style series) draw a letter to start from. And puzzle setters use Greek glyphs as clean symbol sets that carry no English spelling hints.

Equally likely, alpha through omega
The engine maps cryptographic random bytes onto the 24-letter pool by rejection sampling: byte 0 is Alpha, 15 is Pi, 23 is Omega — exactly the scripted draw Α Π Ω shown in the intro, computed at build time by the tested engine. Values beyond the pool are discarded and redrawn, never wrapped around, so Omega is precisely as likely as Alpha. For Latin letters, mixed pools, or vowel/consonant filtering across either alphabet, the main generator has every option in one form; sequences of any length live at Random Letter Sequence.

Which letters are in the pool?
All 24 letters of the modern Greek alphabet, alpha through omega: Α Β Γ Δ Ε Ζ Η Θ Ι Κ Λ Μ Ν Ξ Ο Π Ρ Σ Τ Υ Φ Χ Ψ Ω. Archaic letters that dropped out of the alphabet (digamma, koppa, sampi) are not included. Each of the 24 is exactly equally likely.
Which lowercase sigma does the generator use?
The medial form σ. Greek writes sigma as ς only at the end of a word, and this tool draws letters, not words, so σ is the correct citation form. If you type ς into the main generator’s include or exclude list, it is understood as sigma.
Can I draw only Greek vowels or consonants?
Yes — the vowel filter on the main generator applies to Greek too: the seven vowel letters are α ε η ι ο υ ω, leaving seventeen consonants. This page keeps the full alphabet; use the main generator when you want the filtered pools.
Why do results show the letter name?
Because Θ on its own helps you only if you already read Greek. Each drawn glyph is paired with its name — Theta, say — which is what studying, labeling, and naming conventions actually need. The names come from the same tested data table as the glyphs.
Is anything transmitted when I generate?
No. Draws happen locally in your browser using your device’s cryptographic random source; nothing is sent, logged, or stored.
Uniform means uniform: every Greek letter has probability exactly 1/24 per draw (1/48 in mixed case) — no weighting by usage in mathematics or anywhere else. Draws are local to your browser and never transmitted. See the methodology page.
